New Exercise Guidelines suggest Weekly Workout

New exercise guidelines were released this week that emphasize the importance of working out at least weekly.  These guidelines replace the old ones, that suggested it was healthiest to work out a half-hour a day, five days a week.  Now they are recommending two and a half hours a week.  It’s the same amount of time, but the general idea is that it seems like you’re working out less.

“Being physically active is one of the most important things Americans of all ages can do to protect and improve their health,” said Rear Adm. Penelope Slade Royall, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. For most people, all it takes is 2 1/2 hours a week to stay healthy, she noted.

“The previous recommendation for moderate-intensity physical activity was 30 minutes a day five days a week. This is now just one way to meet the minimum guideline,” Royall said. “The same health benefits accrue to people who exercise vigorously for half the time.” (-via Forbes)

Remember, working out regularly can help fight the risk of an early death from heart disease, a stroke, high blood pressure, breast cancer, colon cancer, and type 2 diabetes.  It helps fight depression and helps you think better as well.

The American Society for Nutrition and the American Heart Association both support these new guidelines.
